Sleep should help your child grow, recharge, and feel their best but when snoring, mouth breathing, or restless nights become the norm, it can affect everything from mood to focus to daytime energy. At Kathy Chauvin ENT, we evaluate pediatric sleep and breathing concerns with a careful, child-focused approach, looking for common causes like enlarged tonsils or adenoids, chronic congestion, and airway irritation. Dr. Kathy Chauvin helps families understand what’s going on and creates a clear plan to improve your child’s sleep and overall comfort.

When to See a Pediatric ENT for Sleep & Breathing Concerns

Consider an ENT evaluation if your child has:

  • Loud or frequent snoring

  • Mouth breathing (especially at night)

  • Restless sleep, frequent waking, or sweating at night

  • Pauses in breathing, gasping, or choking sounds during sleep

  • Chronic nasal congestion affecting sleep

  • Frequent nightmares, bedwetting, or daytime irritability (sometimes linked to poor sleep)

  • Daytime sleepiness, trouble focusing, or behavioral changes

  • Concerns about enlarged tonsils or adenoids

  • A “nasal” or congested voice that doesn’t improve

If you’re not sure whether it’s allergies, congestion, tonsils/adenoids, or something else affecting your child’s sleep, we can help clarify quickly.

Common Sleep & Breathing Conditions We Evaluate & Treat

Snoring

Snoring can be common, but persistent or loud snoring may signal that your child’s airway is partially blocked during sleep. We evaluate potential causes and talk through next steps based on your child’s symptoms.

Mouth Breathing

Kids who breathe through their mouth at night may have chronic congestion or enlarged adenoids/tonsils. Mouth breathing can affect sleep quality and may contribute to daytime fatigue.

Enlarged Tonsils & Adenoids

Tonsils and adenoids are common reasons children struggle with sleep and breathing. When enlarged, they can narrow the airway and contribute to snoring, restless sleep, and breathing pauses.

Suspected Sleep-Disordered Breathing / Sleep Apnea

If you’ve noticed pauses in breathing, gasping, or frequent waking, it’s worth evaluating. We help families understand symptoms, discuss what’s concerning, and determine whether additional testing or treatment may be needed.

Chronic Congestion Affecting Sleep

Ongoing nasal congestion from allergies, frequent illnesses, or irritation can make sleep harder. We evaluate patterns, triggers, and response to prior treatments to build a practical plan.

Sleep & Breathing Services & In-Office Care

Depending on what your child needs, we may provide:

  • Evaluation for snoring, mouth breathing, and restless sleep

  • Tonsil and adenoid evaluation when airway obstruction is suspected

  • Assessment for chronic congestion contributing to poor sleep

  • Guidance on symptom tracking (what to watch for at home)

  • Discussion of treatment options, including conservative management when appropriate

  • Referral coordination when needed (for sleep study or additional testing)

  • Clear follow-up plan to monitor improvement

How We Evaluate Sleep & Breathing Concerns

Your visit typically includes:

  • A thorough symptom history (snoring pattern, breathing pauses, waking, daytime symptoms)

  • Review of congestion/allergy patterns and prior treatments

  • Gentle ENT exam, including evaluation of tonsils and airway-related findings

  • Discussion of likely causes (tonsils/adenoids vs congestion vs irritation)

  • A clear plan and follow-up timeline
